A GIANT AMONG GIANTS! Footy Royalty at Metro Tunnel RSA...
Hailing from a family of football royalty, our trusted and knowledgeable Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS) Manager, Kiandra Ward, spends her weekends singing “See the Bombers fly up, up,” “Daughters of the West,” and “The sound of the mighty giants,’ as her brother and two sisters all make their mark in the VFL & AFL!
The sister of Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants’ Captain, Callan Ward, and the granddaughter of famed South Melbourne player, Bill Gunn, Ms. Ward took her place in the family box at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday afternoon as Mr. Ward lead the Giants to a 49-point victory against her beloved grandfather’s team (now known as the Sydney Swans).
“Sometimes I have to leave the room and watch the replays later,” she said, when asked how she feels about watching Mr. Ward play.
But those pesky butterflies are no match for her pride…
“He’s just been awarded the ‘Most Courageous Player,” she said of his achievements in the AFL.
His outstanding achievements in the AFL began in 2008, when he took to the field with the Western Bulldogs at the age of 18.
Swiftly becoming a household name for his skill and sportsmanship, the Bulldogs young gun was recruited by GWS in 2012 at the age of 21, and became the second youngest Captain ever when he was named as the inaugural leader of the team, alongside Co-Captains Phil Davis and Luke Power.
And as Rodney Eade put it, the Bulldogs’ loss was the Giants’ gain…."It was a big loss, there's a player who's played 200 games, he should've played 200 games for the Bulldogs, he could've been a leader of the club.”
"He's one of the best captains in the AFL, he might be the best," (AFL Legend, Kevin Sheedy).
Ward went on to win the inaugural Kevin Sheedy Medal for the club’s ‘Best & Fairest’ in 2012, and on July 27th this year, he became the GWS Giants’ first ‘playing’ Life Member.
The GWS Giants will face Collingwood Magpies in a thrilling Semi Final this Saturday, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
